Alaska Cruises

Alaska cruises are inspiring but also need prior preparation and we feature some important tips to help you have a wonderful holiday.

Being in the extreme north of North America, Alaska can experience extreme weather conditions and variable external temperatures, there is a price to pay for the beautiful scenery. As a result it is essential that prospective tourists educate themselves on the environment, the geography, the typical and sometimes extreme weather, the temperature range you will meet and how you should prepare so that you can take all this in your stride. Alaskan cruises are not the place to start to think of these challenges and they are best considered in advance of your trip.

The weather will have the biggest influence on your holiday and should be the first thing you consider. Obviously the type of activities you will pursue will influence the weather conditions you prefer but it should be noted that travel and general comfort are better in the summer months, May through to September as Alaska is in the Northern Hemisphere. Your clothing should be matched to the temperature conditions so that your itinerary is not curtailed if it is too cold. Also if you want to take some smaller boat excursions or explore the water make sure that you take suitable waterproof and warm clothing.

Think about your travel companions and choose them well. If you are taking a small child or younger member of your family make sure that they are appropriately dressed and will feel comfortable in the conditions. The outdoors can be exhilarating but not for teenagers who believe that they are going on a beach holiday. Remember that the weather can be very changeable and you may experience several seasons in one week. Alaska cruises are a great time for reflection punctuated with bursts of excitement as the next port or tourist exploration spot is reached as long as your cruise members are not hyperactive excitement addicts who climb the walls during tv ad breaks.

Although it can be unpleasant check that all your proposed explorers are comfortable on a ship. Does anyone have a history of seasickness or get frustrated by enclosed spaces. Your holiday could become their problem.

Being near the top of the world the daylight hours are different to what you may be used to. Long dark winter days and extended summer days with daylight lasting into the middle of the night. This means that you will be able to pack many activities into one summer day and you may need to pace yourself to avoid holiday burnout. Also not everything needs to be seen at the first opportunity although you might want to book onto the first whale viewing opportunity as this always gives you the opportunity to book a second viewing later in the cruise.

If you have never had a holiday on a cruise liner remember that your room is fixed and you will be on the same side of the ship for the whole vacation. Check the proposed itinerary and what can be seen from each side of the ship. Do you want views of the land or to look out at the expanses of the sea with passing ships and maybe whales.

Above all do not let the above advice put you off. Alaska cruises are life changing events. The scenery, people, weather and wildlife are experiences not to be missed.
