Do cruise personnel get paid purely on tips?

Do cruise staff get paid per hour, salary, or purely on tips.
I doubt purely on tips because I am sure that would be against labor laws.
If you know this answer, then also what is the average salary pre tips?

I am going on one for my birthday in October. It is Norwegian Cruise lines. Any tips on avoiding sea sickness, or what shore excursions are the best. I will be in Cozumel and Grand Caymen. I am also spending the night before in Miami. Help me out here folks, I am a first time cruiser.

I’m going on a 4 day 3 night cruise to San Diego, Catalina Island, and Ensenada, Mexico with Royal Caribbean on the Monarch of the Seas.

I am planning on taking a cruise in November for 7 nights. What suggestions does everyone have for the best cruise? Location? Ship? What tips do you have for taking a cruise in general?
I do not have kids. I was leaning towards the Eastern Caribbean or Southern Caribbean. I would be flying from Cincinnati down to Florida. I do not like the cold weather at all.
I like kids, but I don’t want a bunch of unsupervised children running around on the cruise ship.

my family is going a cruise [yay] and it’s our first time going on a cruise. so we have no idea what the hell we r doing….
